State officials add transportation options to prepare for the estimated 1 million Great New York State Fair attendees.

Nearly 68,000 people attended the Great New York State Fair’s opening day this year. With so many people going to and from the fair, New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo had to call for backup.

On Friday, Cuomo announced that the Regional Transit Authorities — consisting of Rochester, Buffalo and Albany — will provide additional bus service for the Great New York State Fair, according to a release by the governor’s office. Last year broke the record in total attendance, landing more than 1 million, prompting state officials to prepare for large turnout this year.

Sixteen additional buses will transport more than 1,000 visitors an hour.

“Getting to the Fair will be easier than ever while easing traffic on local roads,” Cuomo said in the release. “I encourage visitors from near and far to consider using public transportation to get to the Great New York State Fair this year.”

The backup buses will service fairgoers from Friday until Sept. 4, the fair’s last day.
